Sesto San Giovanni, March 13, 2008 --ABB, the leading power and automation technology group, will contribute to a grid development plan being carried out by the Italian energy utility Terna. ABB will supply 13 autotransformers rated at 250 MVA and 400 MVA during the period 2008-2011. This large quantity corresponds to about a quarter of Terna’s current need for enlarging the grid.

The order was awarded after an international call for bids, in which the major domestic and foreign transformer manufacturers participated, for a total of 55 machines. The selection was made on the basis of strict technical and commercial specifications imposed by the strategic importance of the order.

"The quality of our products, which we were able to demonstrate by the excellent statistical data on faults per single units over a ten–year period, played in our favor" commented Fabrizio Pangrazi of the ABB Power Products division, Terna’s account manager. "Furthermore, we were able to document the international framework agreement signed with suppliers of essential raw materials, such as copper and the special sheet steel laminations, which protects the customer from unexpected events that might impact delivery times".

ABB passed the severe pre-qualification process thanks to the reliability of its apparatus, the willingness to reserve an adequate production capacity for the customer for the years needed to complete the order, the guaranteed delivery terms and the stability of the economic conditions.

"Together with our local presence and in-depth knowledge of Terna as a customer, we also brought all the advantages offered by our global organization"added Pangrazi. "We are pleased to note that the market has rewarded our strategy of focusing our factories, enabling us to provide Terna with medium and large power transformers from Bilbao and Cordoba, Spain, and small power transformers from the Italian factory in Monselice ".
