Beijing, China, Apr 15, 2008 -- Siemens China entered into a Center of Knowledge Interchange Agreement with Tsinghua University today to further enhance the bilateral cooperation in research and development, marking the first of such arrangement by Siemens in Asia. Mr. Zhang Yaoxue, Scholar at the Chinese Academy of Engineering (CAE) and Director-general of Department of Higher Education of Ministry of Education, Dr. Hausmann, President and CEO of Siemens China and Prof. Kejun Kang, Vice President of Tsinghua University attended the signing ceremony held in Beijing and endorsed the two agreements.

The Center of Knowledge Interchange (CKI) relationship is the highest level of cooperation for Siemens with higher education institutions. As part of the CKI program, both parties signed a 5-year framework agreement, valued at multi-million RMB per year, focusing on R&D collaboration. The cooperation program will cover a wide spectrum of topics, including high speed train technologies, water purification, CO2 capture, clean imaging, intelligent traffic systems and other areas of mutual interests. Under the agreement, selected senior Siemens executives and university leaders would form a joint Steering Committee to oversee the cooperation program between the 2 institutions.

Funded by Siemens, the Siemens Center of Knowledge Interchange will serve as the liaison office between Siemens and the University to promote knowledge interchange and R&D collaboration. Assigned as the Siemens Ambassador for the CKI at Tsinghua University to champion the university cause within the Siemens community, Dr. Hausmann, President and CEO of Siemens China praised the cooperation, "The CKI relationship provides us a systematic way to increase mutual cooperation. A series of technical workshops were also held today to commemorate the "Siemens Day" in Tsinghua University, on topics like healthcare, energy and industry. Chief Technology Officers, heads of R&D and technical experts from various business units of Siemens joined the exchanges with Tsinghua faculty members to explore areas for potential collaborations, marking the biggest ever of such event between Siemens and Tsinghua.

Starting from 2007, Siemens embarked on a worldwide effort to increase its university cooperation programs with top universities outside Europe. With a long history of engaging various kinds of cooperation programs with Chinese universities, Siemens selected Tsinghua University in Beijing and Tongji University in Shanghai as the first two in Asia for building the CKI relationship.

Siemens' cooperation with Tsinghua University can be dated back to early 1990's and was further extended to research projects in the areas of energy, industry and healthcare. In 2006, Siemens signed a strategic cooperation agreement with Tsinghua University, elevating the partnership to a new level. Under the arrangement, Siemens would award scholarship to the 20 most outstanding students from the Department of Electrical Engineering and Department of Automation each year for three years.
