ABB wins major robotic painting systems order

ABB has received a blanket order from the BMW Group for the implementation of their new painting process. Painting robots with application packages as complete functional painting systems are to be delivered over the course of the next few years. This follows BMW’s selection of ABB as its partner for industrial robots in 2008.

Zurich, Switzerland, August 18, 2011 – Most of the equipment will consist of ABB's latest generation of IRB 5500-type painting robots, which have exceptional performance capabilities and a space-saving configuration. They will be used for the fully automated base and clear coat application of the interior and exterior of car bodies. BMW will also use this robot series to treat and paint plastic parts.

"Robots cut the cost of the painting stage of the manufacturing process and ensure lasting product quality improvement. This not only makes manufacturing processes more reliable, but also optimizes and enhances them," explains Ulrich Spiesshofer, ABB Executive Committee member responsible for the Discrete Automation and Motion division.
